The English Class – a lot more than English!
English teacher as civic educator
An English teacher is fortunate because s/he can be a civic educator and integrate his/her work perfectly into language teaching.
All of the methods used in the workshop are intended to apply equally for English classes. The workshop demonstrates the uses of a survey, analysis, method of creating work groups , group tasks on back of pictures, brainstorming and organization, guided use of the newspaper text/photo/cartoon/announcement, integration of literature and current events, forms to fill out in response to activities, a moving debate etc.
In my view, we as English teachers should do more than teach English language skills. That is obviously our main task and out mandate. We, however, can also help pupils understand the role of democracy in ensuring individual human rights and I think we should.
Worksheets from Workshop given in Jerusalem 5/03/2006
All of the following worksheets (prepared for the workshop) are accompanied by photographs, cartoons, articles, headlines etc. from the press. Most of them have been scanned in here but it may be difficult in some cases to read the text. Images seem fine.
If you can not have the actual material from the newspaper, you can simply use the worksheets as models to help you create your own based on material you yourself find.
