The English Class a lot more than English!

English teacher as civic educator

 Jack Pillemer

An English teacher is fortunate because s/he can be a civic educator and integrate his/her work perfectly into language teaching.

All of the methods used in the workshop are intended to apply equally for English classes. The workshop demonstrates the uses of a survey, analysis, method of creating  work groups , group tasks on back of pictures, brainstorming and organization, guided use of the newspaper text/photo/cartoon/announcement, integration of literature and current events,  forms to fill out in response to activities, a moving debate etc.

In my view, we as English teachers should do more than teach English language skills. That is obviously our main task and out mandate. We, however, can also help pupils understand the role of democracy in ensuring individual human rights and I think we should.

Worksheets from Workshop given in Jerusalem   5/03/2006

All of the following worksheets (prepared for the workshop) are accompanied by photographs, cartoons, articles, headlines etc. from the press. Most of them have been scanned in here but it may be difficult in some cases to read the text. Images seem fine.

If you can not have the actual material from the newspaper, you can simply use the worksheets as models to help you create your own based on material you yourself find.

My  plan for how I intended to run the workshop - probably   useless for anyone  else.
Stuck onto the back of pictures which were cut up into 4 parts.       To be used as a model for something similar with pupils
Activity 1.  It is easy to find your own picture and use this activity
Activity 2. Good for Junior High. Pictures Jewish and Arab and Iranian children participating in protests and demonstrations
Activity 3. This has a short shelf life . Picture of Effie Eitam with bleeding head and a cartoon in which Eitam asks the doctor if he can keep the bandage on till after the election
Activity 4.An article with the arguments the Green Leaf party used in their petition to court against their exclusion from being allowed to promote their platform at Blich High school elections. Probably there are articles on the net which deal with the subject.
Activity 5.Article about the movie complex in Kiryat Gat which was closed in less than a year because of  pressure from religious inhabitants who opposed Shabbat movies. . A short shelf life but the issue constantly pops up so other articles should be easy to find.
Activity 6. Non- political in nature. Announcements on the procedures for presenting lists, finding one's polling station and the laws regarding what remains open and closed on election day. Good for discussion of genre and style and teaching simpler  vocabulary
Activity 7. An article with the details of the charges brought against  Omri Sharon.  Probably there are articles on the net which deal with the subject
Activity 8. An article, already well out of date  as news goes, but still relevant, regarding death threats made against the prime minister before disengagement this summer (2005)
